Quilt Sleeve / Coulisse

Last time I visited a quilt exhibition, I saw that many still didn't know how to make an intelligent hanging sleeve for their quilt. Indeed, you could see the rod, making a bump in the front, and it was not very pretty. That happens if you make a simple tube, and even worse, if you make a narrow single tube!
Here's a reminder on how to make a hanging sleeve, one that will leave your quilt flat on the front side, leaving room for the rod on the back side!
Start by making a regular, simple tube, at least 10 cm wide once ready.

Then with the hot iron, push one of the fold toward the inside, on a half cm width, all along the length of the sleeve. It will make a "D" shape. Now one side of the sleeve is longer than the other.

Sew the narrower side on the back of the quilt. The rod will occupy the extra space you have created without pushing the quilt forward.

  2. Thank you so much for this information! I wondered why some sleeves cause that bump in the front of the quilt. Perfect timing for me!
